Fly Tying

Most traditional flies work well on our waters, classic patterns such as March Brown, Gold Ribbed Hares Ear, Zulu, Mallard and Claret and Peter Ross, will all catch fish.The patterns for these can be found in books by writers such as John Goddard , John Veniard, and Geoffrey Bucknall
Most of these do not include "local" flies, patterns like Cogyn Now'r Allt, and Gwybedyn Bach Llyn Manod, flies that originated from the trout lakes of North Wales. (One book that does include flies local to the region is Moc Morgan's Trout and Salmon Flies of Wales. Some of these patterns will be tied in the Young Anglers Club, meeting at The Fire Station in Blaenau Ffestiniog, see the calender page for dates and times.

Rhwyfwr Cochddu Mawr Hook – 8 Tying Silk – Black Body – A mixture of Dark Brown and Claret Wool, ( Or if you can find a supplier, the wool from the scrotum of a black ram, as was used in the original dressing). Rib – Thin Gold Wire Wing – Brown Owl, encasing Partridge Tail. Hackle – Brown Partridge.
